Ostiomeatal Unit Computed Tomographic Findings in Non-Sinusitis Populations complaining Sinus-Related Symptoms

Abstract
It is well known that nasal symptoms are developed in various nasal diseases. We investigated the underlying causes of the sinus related symptoms in non-sinusitis population using the radiologic studies.
From January 1991 through January 1994. ostiomeatal unit computed tomograms were taken 675 patients who showed little response to adequate medical treatment. Among them, only 20 patients(3.0%) showed no mucosal change in sinuses. The anatomic
variations
of these 20 patients included inferior turbinate hypertrophy in 11 cases(55%), mucosal contact in 10 cases(50%), septal deviation in 3 cases(15%), concha bullosa in 3 cases(15%), Haller's cell in 3 cases(15%), and hypoplasia of maxillary sinus in
I
cases(5%).
These results suggest that nasal symptoms can be developed by structural abnormalities of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, which may induce the sinusitis. We speculate that these structural abnormalities should be corrected to relieve
sinus-related symptoms and to prevent sinusitis.
